This NAPA literature review explores the experiences of older men in care settings, with a particular focus on loneliness, isolation, depression and participation in meaningful activity.
It considers why older men may be less likely to engage with traditional activity provision and highlights the importance of opportunities that reflect individual interests, identities, skills and life experiences. The review also examines the evidence for creative and purposeful engagement as a way to strengthen social connections, support mental wellbeing and reduce isolation.
The findings provide an evidence base for more personalised and inclusive approaches to engaging older men and helped inform the development of NAPA’s Creative Connections for Men project.
