Redefining Movement in Later Life Through Hip Hop, Connection and Joy

Recognised Supplier

At The Blair Academy, we believe older people deserve more than outdated ideas of what later life should look like.

We are a social enterprise redefining movement in later life through Hip Hop-inspired dance sessions that support happy, healthy ageing. Our work is rooted in the belief that: movement should feel joyful, empowering and reflective of the people taking part.

Since 2018, we’ve engaged more than 8,000 people across care homes, community settings and wellbeing programmes in London – helping older adults feel confident, connected and celebrated for who they are.

Challenging Outdated Approaches to Ageing

Too often, activities for older people can feel repetitive, infantilising or disconnected from their identity and lived experience.

Today’s older generation grew up through huge cultural shifts in music, fashion and self-expression. Communities are becoming more diverse, and activity provision must evolve alongside them.

That’s why our sessions are bold, energetic and rooted in culture.

By blending familiar music with accessible movement, we create experiences that encourage people to reconnect with themselves and with others around them. Whether someone is dancing in their chair, laughing with a neighbour or sharing memories sparked by a song, the impact goes far beyond physical activity.

We regularly see our sessions:

  • Reduce loneliness and isolation
  • Support physical and mental wellbeing
  • Build confidence and self-expression
  • Strengthen social connection
  • Bring generations together through shared culture and music

The Power of Representation and Identity

One of the things that makes The Blair Academy unique is our commitment to culturally relevant activity provision.

Older people are not one homogenous group. They have different identities, backgrounds, experiences and tastes. We believe movement should reflect that.

Hip Hop may not traditionally be associated with later life care, but that’s exactly why it matters. It challenges assumptions about ageing and opens the door for older adults to experience something fresh, expressive and empowering.

A Story Rooted in Lived Experience

The Blair Academy was founded by Charlie Blair, whose background spans professional dance, homelessness and care work.

That lived experience shapes everything we do. It allows us to approach sessions with empathy, creativity and a deep understanding of the importance of dignity, connection and belonging.

Our work is not about performance or perfection. It’s about creating spaces where people feel safe to express themselves, move freely and experience joy.

Looking Ahead

We imagine a future where Hip Hop and culturally relevant movement are embedded within everyday care and community provision.

A future where every older person has access to meaningful activities that reflect their identity, culture and energy.

Over the next five years, we aim to become a leading voice in movement for later life – helping shift perceptions of ageing and setting a new standard for what wellbeing in later life can look and feel like.

Charlie Blair is the founder of The Blair Academy, a social enterprise transforming how older people experience movement and wellbeing through Hip Hop-inspired dance. With a background spanning professional dance, care work and lived experience of homelessness, Charlie brings empathy, creativity and authenticity to every aspect of the organisation. Passionate about challenging outdated ideas of ageing, Charlie has helped engage over 8,000 older adults since 2018, creating joyful, culturally relevant experiences that build confidence, connection and community.
