FREQUENTLY ASKED

Your questions, answered.

No. Namaste is strongly associated with supporting people living with advanced dementia, but its principles can also be valuable when supporting people with other complex or changing care needs.

The principles of compassionate presence, sensory connection, dignity, comfort and individualised care can help professionals think differently about how they connect with someone when conventional forms of activity or engagement may no longer be appropriate.

No. Communication is an important part of all person centred care, but Namaste Care is not a communication skills programme.

Namaste Care has a distinct focus on compassionate presence, comfort, dignity, personalised sensory experiences and meaningful connection. It can be particularly valuable when someone is less able to express themselves through words, but the purpose is not to teach communication techniques.

Instead, it helps care professionals consider how they can continue to recognise and respond to the individual and create meaningful moments as a person’s abilities and needs change.

The principles can be especially meaningful as a person approaches the end of life, when comfort, dignity, reassurance and human connection are particularly important. The focus is on being with the person, rather than expecting them to participate, perform an activity or respond in a particular way.

Gentle and individualised experiences, such as reassuring presence, appropriate touch, familiar music, preferred aromas or other comforting sensory experiences, can provide opportunities for calm and connection.

The approach does not replace clinical, palliative or end of life care. Its compassionate, person centred principles can sit alongside this care, helping teams and families continue to recognise the individual, honour their preferences and maintain meaningful connection.

No. The Awareness Workshop is the starting point of the education pathway and is designed to introduce participants to the essential principles of the approach.

No. We explore everyday relationships and interactions, so its principles can be relevant to a wide range of people involved in care and support.

Yes. The course uses immersive learning experiences, practical demonstrations and facilitated practice to help participants translate the philosophy of Namaste Care into everyday practice.

No. Namaste Care complements person-centred care, support and meaningful activity. It can help teams consider how comfort, connection and meaningful engagement can continue as an individual’s abilities and care needs change.
