Year of Culture

Bastille Day (14 July)

Awareness Day

A Celebration of History, Culture and Community

By Hilary Woodhead, CEO, National Activity Providers Association

Bastille Day offers a wonderful opportunity to explore French culture, traditions and history while creating engaging experiences for people living in care and community settings. Whether through food, music, art or travel memories, French-themed activities can inspire conversation, creativity and reminiscence. Celebrated annually on 14 July, Bastille Day is France’s national day. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris in 1789, a pivotal moment in the French Revolution. Today, the day is marked throughout France with celebrations, parades and community events. France has long held a special place in British culture. Many older people have memories of holidays in France, French cuisine, language lessons or cultural exchanges. Bastille Day provides an opportunity to revisit those memories while exploring a rich cultural heritage.

Travel and cultural themes often encourage storytelling and social interaction.

Activities centred around France can support:

  • Reminiscence
  • Learning
  • Creativity
  • Community participation
  • Sensory engagement

The theme can be adapted for all abilities and interests.

Focus on enjoyment, exploration and participation. Use sensory experiences such as music, aromas, images and food to create immersive experiences. Encourage residents to share travel memories and cultural experiences.
